The New City School-Pine Avenue and The New City School-Long Beach Boulevard are two K-8 public charter schools located in downtown Long Beach, California. The educational program at both campuses emphasizes bilingualism / multiculturalism, creative expression, reasoning, health and community engagement. The schools offers 360 elementary and middle school students an alternative to the large and often impersonal traditional education system so it can best meet the needs of our urban community, in particular those families of English Language Learners in low-income households. As a small charter school, The New City School actively promotes an individualized approach to education; we have created a safe, supportive learning environment that is appropriate for every student. The academic program is based on the work of several important learning theories, most notably those of Jean Piaget’s “constructivism” and Paolo Freire’s “critical theory.”

The New City School is part of the New City Public Schools network of small, urban charter schools. To learn more about New City Public Schools, please click here.
